“I always wanted
to step out on faith,” Christina R. Alexander says about leaving the corporate
world to start an organization that emulates African American women in a
positive light.
The petite sized, 32 year-old is bringing masses of
women together in the city of Houston, Texas, through her latest venture. As a
conscious woman in her own right, she started The League of Xtraordinary Women
with a vision to change how black women are cast in society.
“I went through my fair share of horrible
relationships, jobs, and I could not afford therapy. I decided to go online and
read articles that were therapeutic to help heal the pain that I was going
through in my own life.”
As a native of Houston, Texas, and a resident of the
Fifth Ward community, Christina has put together a unique concept that women
have been flocking to since the organization’s conception in 2010.
“It was alarming that I knew stepping out on faith
and beginning a project without help would manifest into what the organization has
blossomed into today,” she exerts while gazing at the sky.
The business owner, believes that it is important that
other women understand that she has went through some of the same situations
they have, and that there are resources in place to help them get out.
As she takes off her glasses during the interview,
Christina acknowledges that as black women, “We are the flowers of the earth.
It took me a while to understand this too. I went through a lot as a young
woman in my twenties. I dated the wrong person and I was estranged from my
biological family for eight years of my life.”
Christina acknowledges that she never received her
own recognition to be her own person
in her immediate family. She so she chose another road, that was dismal at
first, and it was during those moments of searching for her own identity that
she knew the universe had a purpose for her life.Through the organization that
she has created, it has helped Christina propel into the woman that she is
today.
Now in her early thirties, she is working on becoming a certified life coach.

“I’ve always wanted to do this and uplift others.
People always seem comfortable with sharing their story with me. And, I enjoy
listening and giving advice. I have experienced a lot,” she says.
Raising a daughter and newly engaged, Christina Alexander believes that her life is on the right track. Through the
organization that she started, it has helped her grow in more ways than one. And
as a result, she has been blessed with a team of people who now help her with
LOEW.
Individuals interested in The League of Xtraordinary
women can view their blog on online, become a member of their Facebook page,
and attend events in the city on a monthly basis. The organization has garnished
a number of positive messages as it pertains to Christina’s mission and vision.
“As far as feedback from the events and the
organization…Women tell me that it helps them. I am starting to see a lot of
women step out on faith and start their own businesses, exude more self-esteem,
they are becoming more spiritually inclined, and working on their daily
regimens of being healthy,” she adds.
In the future, Christina believes that her
organization will become a non-profit, and will expand outside of Houston.
On June 7, 2012, The League of Xtraordinary Women
will host a Family Roundtable. Topics include: faith, family, and finance. The event will be held at the Julia C. Hester
House at 2020 Solo Street, Houston, TX, 77020. Although the event is free to
the public, donations are being accepted via the organization’s event portal to
support the costs of the venue and food.

Love learning about this especially in a time where the catty mess shown on a lot of reality shows portrays black women in such a negative light. My hat goes off to Christina for being a WOMAN not afraid to relate and give of herself to her fellow sisters. It's not a competition out here and many of us have SO many things in common if we could really just relate to one another on a caring level, it would be so beneficial. You ladies make me want to reloate to TX so many awesome things happening!!!
ReplyDeleteHi CookieLady! Thanks so much for your feedback. It's up to us to make a difference and I grew tired of seeing the foolishness that happens on these reality shows and in our own backyards! No more crabs in a barrel mentality here. As you said there is enough for everyone. Please feel free to join us today at www.leagueofxtraordinarywomen.blogspot.com. Don't count us out yet!
